Seeking performers ages school-age to 60+

Auditions:

  • Saturday, Jan. 17 | 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM

  • Sunday, Jan. 18 | 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Dance Call:

  • Saturday begins at 4:15 PM

  • Sunday begins at 5:00 PM

Callbacks (Invitation Only):

Synopsis:

A young Black woman filled with self-doubt embarks on a journey through time, guided by her African ancestors, and ultimately discovers self-love and acceptance.

HOW TO PREPARE & WHAT TO BRING

Please bring the following to your audition:

  • A vocal track (karaoke/instrumental) — 16-bar cut (approximately 45–60 seconds)

  • A memorized monologue (1 minute). If needed, a short monologue can be chosen from the selection provided at this link: Optional Monologue Selections

  • A change of comfortable clothing suitable for movement/dance

  • Headshot and résumé (if available)

 

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Seeking a cast of:

  • 6 Principal Women

  • 3 Ensemble Women

  • 6 Girls/Teens

 

Principal Roles

​

SISTER: A young African-American woman in her 20s on a journey of self-acceptance as she struggles to find her place in the world.

​

LITTLE SISTER: African-American girl, ages 6–8. Reflects Sister’s younger self. Also plays Ruby Bridges.

​

QUEEN AMANIRENAS: The eldest of the Warrior Queens. A Sudanese warrior queen, blinded in one eye during battle. Nurturing and commanding, she serves as the leader and guiding force of the ancestral queens.

​

PRINCESS YENNENGA: (Ages 17–20s) The youngest of the African Warrior Queens from Northern Ghana. Athletic, energetic, and eager, she serves as one of Sister’s ancestral guides.

​

QUEEN GUDIT: An Ethiopian warrior queen. Ruthless yet graceful, she can be pushy or impatient but remains deeply purposeful in guiding Sister.

​

QUEEN NZINGA: An Angolan warrior queen. A fast thinker and speaker—visionary, negotiator, and strategist.

​

QUEEN AMINA: A Nigerian warrior queen. The most skilled strategist and diplomat among the queens—confident, composed, and commanding.

 

Additional Roles

The Warrior Queens and Ensemble will portray multiple historical and contemporary figures, including but not limited to:

Character roles are also available for kids and teens.

  • Triple-threat performers (strong singers, dancers/movers, and actors)

  • Tap dancers, ballet dancers

  • Strong vocalists

  • Singers who dance and dancers who sing

REHEARSALS

Rehearsals begin Tuesday, January 27 at 6:30 PM Location: The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd

  • Tuesdays–Saturdays and some Sundays

  • 6-week rehearsal process

  • 1 week of tech at Zeiders

  • 3 days of tech at Suffolk Center

 

PERFORMANCE DATES

  • March 12–15

  • April 3–4 Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts Suffolk, VA
